GlobalMET completed the formalities for shifting its base from Australia to Hong Kong, bringing it closer to its members — a decision taken by the Board of Directors in 2021.
GlobalMET has been confirmed as a member of the IMO Correspondence Group on Maritime Training, whose scope includes provisions directly influencing the quality of on-board training.
GlobalMET represented its members at the Intersessional Working Group on Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships (14–18 March 2022), which discussed short and long term measures including alternative fuels.
GlobalMET (represented by Capt. Vinayak Mohla) has been confirmed as the review group Coordinator for revised model course 1.35 on LPG tanker cargo and ballast handling simulator.
GlobalMET, represented by Capt. Vinayak Mohla and Capt. Sriram Rajagopal, joins the review group on revised IMO model course 1.32 on operational use of integrated bridge systems.
GlobalMET represented its members at the 8th session of the IMO Sub-Committee on Ship Systems and Equipment (28 February – 4 March 2022): model course 3.03 revision, lifeboat ventilation, lifting appliances and ro-ro fire safety.

MAAP President VADM Santos and SPU President Sister Merceditas Ang of St. Paul University (3rd Place Winner) served as panel discussants in a webinar on the role of internationalization during and after COVID-19, part of the Forum on Higher Education of the Future facilitated by UPOU Chancellor Dr. Melinda Baldarama via FB live stream, YouTube and Zoom.
The Graduation Parade of 192 marine cadets, including 6 lady marine cadets, was organized at BMA. H E Sheikh Hasina, Hon’ble Prime Minister, attended virtually as Chief Guest, joined by Shipping Minister Mr. Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury MP, Shipping Secretary Mr. Mezbah Uddin Chowdhury and marine dignitaries. Cadet Abir Mohammad Sadman Noor received the President’s Gold Medal as best all-round cadet. Health and safety precautions were maintained throughout; BMA’s 3-year program comprises 24 months of classes followed by 12 months aboard ocean-going ships.
Despite Covid-related disruptions, 95 IMEC cadets graduated after their training at the Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific — part of almost 1,500 graduates of the IMEC cadet program. IMEC and MAAP are proud members of GlobalMET.
Deputy Director and GHG Adviser Mr. Stephan Nanan and Technical Head Capt. Sukhjit Singh delivered two featured presentations at the webinar “GHG Reduction Measures in The African Maritime Sector In-Line with The International and National Regulations”, alongside Engr. Denis Mulwa and Engr. Luke Samba of MTCC Africa — driving global decarbonisation of maritime transport.
MTI has grown in size and scope with two large campuses in Karachi: full-mission navigation simulators, a swimming pool for survival-at-sea courses, a davit-launched enclosed lifeboat, chemical and oil tanker simulators and crane simulator training. More recently it has expanded into shore-based maritime, supply chain and logistics courses.
It is with complete shock and disbelief that we received the news of the sudden demise of the Executive Secretary (GlobalMET), Captain Richard Teo (Dr Hon), on 13th November 2021.
Richard was associated with GlobalMET for most of the organisation’s life and undertook various activities for its members. He spoke very highly of GlobalMET and was proud to be a Board Member. He will be greatly missed both here and internationally within the maritime and political spheres.

Teo’s memory →GlobalMET holds NGO consultative status at the IMO and regularly presents at HTW and other sub-committees — from our first presentation of the Deck Cadet SSTP in 2011 to the tablet-based Engine Cadet Record Book (2018) and an augmented-reality ship familiarisation demo (2019).
